Travel: 24 hours in Breckenridge

Breckenridge, Colorado is one of my favorite places to visit in this amazing state. It is an easy drive (barring no traffic snafus), there are amazing restaurants, great shops and beautiful scenery. We decided, spur of the moment to head up the mountain and enjoy the fall colors and a little time away.

I have been up to Breck several times and thought I would share a few recommendations on what to do, what to eat and drink and where to stay. I hope you enjoy and find some time to explore Breckenridge!

Where to stay
There are so many options for lodging in Breckenridge. The price you pay will definitely depend on the time of year you go as well as the availability. Ski season is the peak tourist time in Breckenridge because of the amazing snow and ski resorts. This time of year can be busy but we didn’t have any trouble finding a room and the rate was very reasonable. This trip we stayed at the Village Hotel Breckenridge. This is so perfect because its right in the middle of town so everything is walkable. We ended up in an amazing room that is privately owned. It had a full kitchen, living room and one bedroom. It was perfect for the night but would be great for a long weekend. I’ve also stayed at the Double Tree which is a farther walk to town but very nice. If you are traveling with a group, there are countless VRBOs and airBnB’s available.

What to do
This trip was all about the fall colors. We wanted to hike but not have to drive too far. We stumbled across a great trail called the B&B Mines Trailhead. I would consider this an easy hike. It’s dog friendly and was a great way to see the fall foliage. We hiked about 5 miles in a couple of hours. My favorite part is that the trailhead starts just northeast of town but it feels like you’ve driven miles out.

I’d also recommend strolling through town. Breckenridge has a gorgeous downtown with so many local shops, restaurants, bars, and galleries. It’s beautiful in the warmer months with stunning flowers and breathtaking in the winter decorated with lights.

Where to eat
Meal options are endless. There are so many choices and all the food is fantastic. For breakfast, you have to brave the lines and try Crepe a la Cart. This is a tiny hut with two guys cracking out amazing crepes any way you like them. They have savory and sweet options but I recommend trying both. This trip we had the German Apple Strudel with apples, caramel, raisins, and strudel. It was SO GOOD! It wasn’t too sweet but I definitely felt like I was having dessert for breakfast. We also had the Parisian made with ham, brie, mustard and we added spinach. This was so tasty and is apparently the owners favorite crepe on the menu.

For lunch I would recommend the Kenosha Grill, the Blue Stag, or the Breckenridge Tap House. All have amazing food from burgers, sandwiches to street tacos. Especially after a day of hiking or skiing, you will have an appetite and any of these places will do the trick.

Finally, dinner- I really only have one recommendation since it’s the place we go every time, Modis. This is one of my favorite restaurants in Colorado, not just Breckenridge. I have never been disappointed with my drink or food choice. On the menu for us this go around:

Drinks: Thyme Served- vodka, cranberry liqueur, thyme, orange, lavender and agave. The gentleman had The Liberal- made of Rittenhouse Rye, Carpano Antica, Amer Picon, and orange bitters.

Appetizers: P.E.I mussels. They are spectacular. The seasonal mussels had bacon, fennel, jalapeños, white wine broth and spicy tomato sauce.

Entrée: Boneless short rib with roasted carrots and fingerling potatoes and hickory smoked pork-chop with fingerling potatoes, brussels sprouts, and crispy sage.

Dessert: Seasonal Profiteroles, topped with caramel and pecans.

If you’ve been thinking about a trip to Breckenridge, definitely do it! It is a great town, so many nice people and beautiful things to see, eat, and drink!

Go Breck!
